Skyline finally arrives.

This is us taking delivery of our new (second hand) recently referbished Skyline. This machine will allow us to extract timber from sites either formerly inaccessable or difficult to work on with our skidder and forwarder operation, usually due to steep hillsides.
This machine works like an aerial winch system. The tower on the machine is erected and anchored back to suitable anchor trees stumps etc. The skyline rope is then taken out to the far end of the felling site and attached to a spar tree, which is also anchored back. A carriage is then winched along the skyline rope to a chokerman who attaches the timber to a winch rope which is attached to the carraige. The skyline operater, who is situated in the cab below the tower, then hauls the timber back to the landing area and drops it. He then hauls the carraige back to the chokerman to repeat the operation another couple of million times!
These pictures were of us just getting familiar with the machine, we are currently back in Burtness clearfelling and thinning a site in preperation for 2 weeks training and then assessment, with the legendary Dick Bradshaw, we will keep you updated in the near future and hopefully upload a video or two of it working.

About ntaxemen

It's not all about axes. There are three foresters plus one apprentice in the North Lakes. Our names are Thomas, Bob, Anthony and Steven. We cover Ullswater, Borrowdale and Buttermere. We're the ones who go out into 1000 hectares of National Trust woodlands in these valleys and make sure they're healthy and safe.
